Day 16 (19th August) – Zell am See to Lahn.
In cycling parlance, “transition days” typically refer to stages in a race that are designed to move the event from one significant stage to another without being a major challenge themselves. Important days for climbers, as it allows them to have a break from the demands of continuing climbing and provides a form of recovery whilst riding.
After our big day out on the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, it was good to have 2 days rest in Zell am See (Zell on Lake) followed by a short days cycling without any steep or challenging climbs. And we were again lucky enough to dodge another torrential storm. Liz is convinced we are riding through Camelot, where “the rain may never fall till after sundown”.

An easy ride through back roads, laneways and bike paths. And while rain threatened, we remained dry as the rainclouds retreated as we headed up the valley.
With the afternoon free, Sue and I decided to hike up to Krimmler Wasserfälle.
The highest waterfalls in Austria and promoted as one of the most stunning natural attractions in Europe, we figured it might be pumping after all these storms we’ve been having. It certainly was.
